- Beverley says Tatum and Brown are too closely related as players
- Celtics duo faces questions after last season’s playoff collapse
On paper, the Boston Celtics have everything they need to be a powerhouse in the East for years to come. But if you ask NBA veteran guard Patrick Beverley, the Celtics team built around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown is built to fail.
According to Bev, the Js have a similar playstyle that will limit how far they can go in the postseason. “Too much of the same player, they don’t compliment each other enough… they compliment each other but not enough.”
Interestingly, when asked which player he’d get rid of, Beverley denied that he would trade either. Instead, he leaned toward adding something to make it work.
“I would add a defensive point guard, a three-and-d guy, a shot blocker, or maybe a stretch five. But with Porzingis, they’ll (Celtics) be a lot better.”

It’s bold to be so dismissive of the team that was one win away from the NBA Finals. In fact, the Celtics have been to the Conference Finals four times already in the Tatum era with their most successful run coming in 2022 when they advanced to the NBA Finals.
Together, Tatum and Brown have made the Celtics a real threat in the East, but they have yet to go all the way and bring home a title. Whether it’s one obstacle or another, something always holds them back from their goal and there will always be doubts until they can finish the job.
Are The Celtics The Favorites To Win The East Next Season?
After losing their series against the 76ers, Boston responded by trading Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis to build up their shooting and size on the perimeter. This move will no doubt make them a better shooting team, but it may not do much to fix some of the other problems plaguing the roster.
For Boston, the biggest factor to success will ultimately be Jayson Tatum. if he can step up and become the superstar we know he can be, then nothing will stop the Celtics from finally getting over the hump.
But if he continues to falter and fight for leadership with Jaylen Brown, then the Celtics may continue to suffer growing pains in spite of all the recent changes.
