- The Greek Freak says he will not sign a max extension if everyone is not “on the same page”
- Giannis re-affirms his commitment to winning in a revealing quote
- The Bucks are feeling the pressure to win with Giannis’ potential free agency looming
As one of the last loyal superstars in the NBA, Giannis Antetokounmpo has taken pride in bringing success to Milwaukee and winning a title with the team that drafted him. But even now, long after the title was won, the idea that Giannis might leave for greener pastures is alive and well.
From the words of the Greek star himself, he will not even re-sign his next extension if he feels that he’s not on the “same page” with the Bucks. “I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s going for a championship, everybody’s going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do,” said Giannis, via the New York Times. “And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing.”
Giannis will be eligible for a huge supermax extension in just a few weeks, but it seems he’s leaning towards letting his contract expire so he can hit free agency in 2025.
“The real question’s not going to be this year — numbers-wise it doesn’t make sense,” Antetokounmpo said. “But next year, next summer it would make more sense for both parties. Even then, I don’t know.”
Giannis, 28, has done virtually everything there is to do in the NBA. As a 7x All-Star, 2x MVP, and 2021 NBA Champion, he’s really got nothing left to prove when it comes to the game of basketball.
Even so, Giannis hasn’t lost his desire to compete and it’s no secret that he aims to be competitive each and every season. The Bucks have done pretty well overall in the Greek Freak era, but there are some doubts that they can win another title as presently constructed.
The Clock Is Ticking For The Milwaukee Bucks
The pressure to win is evident for any team with a star player, and that’s especially true for the Bucks. After winning the Finals a few years ago, they haven’t really taken any steps forward and one could say they even took a step back after their first-round elimination this past spring.
As a high competitor and a pure winner at heart, Antetokounmpo isn’t about to waste any more of his prime in a mediocre situation.
The problem for GM Jon Horst is finding a way to mix things up without giving up his top players, but something must be done soon if he wants to avoid giving Giannis the wrong idea about their franchise trajectory.
