When he’s healthy, it is clear that Zion Williamson has MVP-level potential, and is the New Orleans Pelicans’ best chance of winning a championship one day. There is no doubt that he is a supreme talent.
There have been a lot of rumors about Zion Williamson’s relationship with the Pelicans, and some reports have indicated that tensions have gotten worse between the two parties. However, recently, GM David Griffin spoke out about the relationship, noting that it is “as good as it’s been”.
“Yeah. I would say it’s as good as it’s ever been actually. He’s coming out here to join the team to be with Herb [Jones] and Trey [Murphy] and some of these veterans that are here. Brandon [Ingram]’s gonna come join the team as well. I would say it’s as good as it’s been.”
There is no doubt that this is good to hear from David Griffin. Hopefully, we see Zion Williamson play a good amount of games next season, and make the New Orleans Pelicans a contender.
Zion Williamson put up 26.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 4.6 APG for the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2022-23 regular season. He is a dominant player, and he can clearly be a huge difference-maker for the Pelicans if he can stay healthy.
Zion Williamson’s Off-Court Issues Have Shocked Pelicans Officials
Zion Williamson has definitely had some off-court issues this off-season. In fact, a report indicated that the superstar’s issues have shocked “high-ranking members of the organization”.
“There has been frenzied speculation about New Orleans dealing with Williamson. The Athletic reported that the Pelicans want to move up in the 2023 draft to select guard Scoot Henderson,” wrote Ian Begley. “Williamson would, presumably, be a key part of a trade up to the top 3 in the draft. Also, high-ranking members of the organization have been dismayed by recent off-court developments around Williamson, as other outlets have noted. The organization recently fired assistant coach Teresa Weatherspoon, a Naismith Hall of Famer who was instrumental in the development of several young Pelicans, including Williamson. Those reading the tea leaves may surmise that Weatherspoon’s firing was related to the team’s issues with Williamson.”
It remains to be seen how the relationship between Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans develops going forward. This is definitely a situation to monitor, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
