Ramona Shelburne Claims That The Lakers Were Unwilling To Spend Future Draft Assets And Take On Salary To Fix Their Team At The Trade Deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers are a team that has been in disarray for the majority of the season. They have been unable to go on a winning run, and they are far from the contending team that many expected them to be at the start of the season.

There was some expectation that the Los Angeles Lakers would make some sort of move to try and improve their roster ahead of the trade deadline. However, the Los Angeles Lakers ended up staying put, even though they had a deal on the table from the Houston Rockets, that would allow them to acquire John Wall and Christian Wood.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN has recently revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers organization was unwilling to spend future draft capital and take on salary to improve the current Lakers roster. It makes sense that the Lakers would be concerned about its future, as they have few draft assets over the next few years.

My interpretation was that the Lakers organization, from ownership on down, basically decided: ‘You guys got yourself into this. This is the bed you have made. LeBron, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, all the future Hall of Famers, this is your choice of roster and team, go make it work, and we are not going to mortgage our future in terms of draft picks and in terms of taking on luxury tax’

There is no doubt that this Los Angeles Lakers roster isn’t exactly the perfect fit with one another. Many have claimed that Russell Westbrook’s fit with the team is a problem, but their issues extend far beyond that. The team as a whole has struggled to play defense all season and has looked clunky on the offensive end as well.

Hopefully, we see the Los Angeles Lakers improve in the future. They are still a talented team, and perhaps we’ll see them make a run soon. However, they are running out of time to figure things out.
