With the NBA Finals done and dusted, the attention of the media and fans is turning to June 22, 2023. The 2023 NBA Draft will take place in New York, and Victor Wembanyama is the biggest attraction for most.
Wembanyama is expected to be picked as the number one overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs. Ahead of the NBA Draft, there is a possibility that other organizations could contact the Spurs for a potential trade to move to the top spot. However, L.J. Ellis of SpursTalk revealed in a recent report that the Spurs have no plans to entertain such calls.
“We’re not picking up that phone,” the source told Ellis. “[Wembanyama] is a chance to reorient the entire franchise and build upon the experiences and successes of the last 30 years. He’s that type of player and, more importantly, that type of person.”
There’s no doubt about the talent that Wembanyama possesses. Getting a chance to draft him is once in a lifetime opportunity for any franchise, and the Spurs have been blessed with the chance of doing so.
The French phenom is coming off a season where he averaged 21.6 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 2.4 APG, 0.7 SPG, and 3.0 BPG for the Metropolitans 92.
San Antonio Spurs Want To Pair Victor Wembanyama With Chris Paul Or Fred VanVleet
The San Antonio Spurs are arguably the best destination for Victor Wembanyama to get drafted. He will be coached by the legendary Gregg Popovich. Coach Pop has experience working with legendary big men David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
Wembanyama could be the next generational big man to flourish under the coaching of Popovich. But if the Spurs want to compete right away, they need to add a quality guard to the roster.
According to a recent report, the Spurs are keen on pairing Wembanyama with Chris Paul or Fred VanVleet for the 2023-24 NBA season.
“When free agency opens, a scout for a Western Conference team believes the Spurs will make a hard push for either Chris Paul or Fred VanVleet. He posits that the opportunity to pair Wembanyama with an experienced playmaker at point guard will ultimately be impossible for San Antonio to pass up.”
Paul is coming off the heels of averaging 13.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 8.9 APG in the 2022-23 NBA season, but is currently middle of a tricky contract situation with the Phoenix Suns.
Keeping that in mind, going for VanVleet will be an easier path for the Spurs. The 29-year-old recently declined his $22.8 million player option to become an unrestricted free agent. VanVleet averaged 19.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 7.2 APG during the regular season.
