Shaquille O’Neal is someone who cares a lot about his family. He has always been outspoken in doing everything in his power to make sure his loved ones are taken care of.
However, being one of the most popular athletes in the world, even a single mistake could bring a stain to the reputation of his family. Keeping that in mind, O’Neal revealed in an October 2022 episode of the ‘Revolt’ podcast that he avoids drinking in public.
“I do drink, but not in public because I can’t do nothing to jeopardize my mother’s empire,” Shaq said. “So I’m not gonna sit here and say I don’t drink. Me and my father used to drink after all the championship games. So If I’m at the house, I’ll drink, but I’m not going to drink at a restaurant and jump in a car and then.”
Shaq added: “Because my father always used to tell me, ‘If you mess the money up, your mama ain’t gonna have no house, if you mess the money up, your mama ain’t going to eat. You the one. God has chosen you to get this family out of Brick City.’ I drink at the crib, but I’m not gonna drink on the show.”

Shaquille O’Neal was raised by his stepfather Phillip Harrison. Harrison played a crucial role in setting him on the correct path in life. So much so that he wanted O’Neal to have a second plan if he failed to make it to the NBA.
Fortunately, the Diesel never needed a backup plan, as he went down as one of the most dominant players of all time.
Shaquille O’Neal’s Father Made Him Hate Alcohol At 13 Years Old
Drinking occasionally can help a person in relaxing themselves and clearing their mind. But it doesn’t take long for it to become a habit.
In order to make sure Shaquille O’Neal didn’t go down that path, his father had an interesting technique to make him hate alcohol at the age of 13. Harrison apparently made Shaq drink a 12-pack of beer at 13.
Since then, O’Neal developed a hatred for alcohol. But as he revealed in the podcast, he used to enjoy an occasional drink with his father after championship games.
