For the first time in his Warriors career, Stephen Curry is openly discussing the need for the Warriors to make trades to salvage the season. He’s been tight-lipped about such discussions before, even when they missed the playoffs in 2021. However, after a 36-point loss to the Pelicans, Curry compared the Warriors trying to run their current group throughout the season to insanity.

“We have a standard that’s pretty evident that if things stay the same. That’s the definition of insanity, right? Keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result?”

Curry also said that he and the players can only control their effort and focus on the court while not getting distracted by people talking about trades or anything else.

“As players, what we can control is our effort, focus, competitiveness…Like every NBA season, every organization, that stuff works itself out. You can’t allow yourself to get distracted by that. because whether you’re at the top of the standings or the bottom, there are always rumors swirling, always conversations. Just part of the business. Until anything happens, you can’t get caught up in it. It’ll rob you of the opportunity to play good basketball.”

After going 2-5 in their last seven games at home, the Warriors have to be feeling the burn of a competitive Western Conference. They’ve fallen to 17-20 and been jumped by the Utah Jazz in the standings. They’re falling into the kind of hole we saw the Lakers have to battle out of last season, but that wouldn’t have been possible without a roster overhaul via trades.

Golden State is in an uncomfortable position, but even Curry has made it clear that something needs to change.

Can The Warriors Save Their Season On The Trade Market?

There are pieces that the Warriors could move for instant upgrades without necessarily hurting their future or the established trio of Steph, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. Players like Andrew Wiggins will likely be the first available name on the block, but his poor season means that an upgrade won’t be possible without at least one young asset or draft pick.

Out of the trio of Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and Brandin Podziemski, it seems Moody might be the one most likely to be moved for an upgrade. Kuminga will fill any hole Wiggins leaves on the wings while also being a project that Warriors owner Joe Lacob has high expectations from. Podziemski has become an instant favorite for Kerr, leaving Moody as the least protected one.

Wiggins and Moody, along with a few picks could allow the Warriors space of up to $30 million to make changes. The answer isn’t someone like Pascal Siakam on his own, as the Warriors have rotational flaws to address.

Nobody would’ve seen Russell Westbrook going to the Jazz last season to land the Lakers three different players, so maybe there’s an out-of-left=field trade that new GM Mike Dunleavy has in his back pocket. If he does have one, he should push to make it happen before the February 8 trade deadline.
