Many questions have been drawn regarding Kevin Durant’s departure from the Golden State Warriors. After winning two titles in a span of three years, many wondered why a former NBA MVP would leave such an ideal situation at the prime of his career.
While the rest of the world is still coming to terms with the reality of the situation, Warriors coach Steve Kerr says he and the squad knew it was going to happen.
“It didn’t surprise us,” Kerr said in a recent episode of All The Smoke podcast. “We all had a sense that Kevin’s probably looking to move on and take on a new challenge. He’d been here three years and won two championships and been Finals MVP twice. It was just, for his own personal career, time for a new challenge and we all totally respected that.”
Durant’s tenure with the Warriors was largely unchallenged up until the 2020 playoff run, when injuries compromised the health of several key players — including Durant himself.
With two titles to his name, he accomplished what he set out to do in Golden State.
Now, he faces new challenges in Brooklyn and will earn new0found respect if he and Kyrie Irving are able to conquer them. But, away from Golden State, he might find life on his own to be a bit more challenging than he got used to as a teammate of Steph, Klay, and Draymond.
We’ll see how he is able to respond in the end.
