The Chris Paul Effect: Led The OKC Thunder To The Playoffs With 0.2% Chances; Took The Suns From 10th To 2nd In The West

3 Min Read

Chris Paul will go down in history as one of the best point guards this game has seen. The veteran player has played in five NBA teams now and wherever he’s gone, that team has improved its level big time.

It happened with the New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder and it’s also happening with the Phoenix Suns. They aren’t making a lot of noise but as quiet as they are, the Arizona team is ranking 2nd in the Western Conference, only behind the inspired Utah Jazz.

CP3 has revitalized every team where he played and the last two seasons are the biggest example of that. He landed in OKC after failing to win a championship with James Harden and the Houston Rockets; he was given 0.2% chances of making the playoffs and they did it against all odds, taking the Rockets to a 7th game in the first round of the 2020 NBA postseason.

This season he’s joined Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton in Arizona and the results have been great. The Suns finished last season at 10th despite going 8-0 in the Orlando bubble and everybody believed they were one piece away from becoming a competitive team.

That piece landed in the offseason with CP3 getting traded to Phoenix. So far, that has been one of the best moves of the 2020 offseason. The Suns have won 30 games and seem to be well on the way to the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

If they can be a championship team, time will tell, especially knowing they will probably have to go against the Lakers, Clippers, or Jazz to play in the Finals this season but the things we’re watching from Chris Paul and this team are remarkable.

Some people like Reggie Miller have put the 35-year-old as one of the candidates to win the 2021 MVP award while others like Shaquille O’Neal have recognized his contribution to the team but don’t see Point God as an MVP contender.

The only certainty now is that Paul still got it and he’s aging like a fine wine. He has had a terrific tenure with the Suns and they can’t wait to see what’s next for this team, which has already surprised a lot of people around the association.
