The preparations for the 2023 FIBA World Cup are ramping up. Team USA will be desperate to avoid another fiasco like their performance in 2019, where they ended the tournament in seventh place.
Ahead of the start of training camp, The Athletic has revealed who will be some of the young stars on the USA Select Team that will scrimmage against the senior team during camp.
“Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons, Jalen Green of the Houston Rockets, and Keegan Murray of the Sacramento Kings are among the group of rising American stars that will join Team USA for training camp in Las Vegas next month.”
Holmgren is the only rookie in the mix, not playing a single game last season and entering his rookie campaign in 2023-24. His teammate Jalen Williams emerged as a standout rookie from last season’s class coupled with Keegan Murray, the two finalists for the ROTY award behind Paolo Banchero. Banchero is on Team USA.
Cade Cunningham suffered an injury-trodden sophomore campaign in 2022-23, while Jalen Green refined his scoring ability and averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in the season.
International Stars Galore At The FIBA World Cup
The FIBA World Cup is going to be fascinating to watch, with the tournament beginning on August 25. Team USA will feature a talented group of rising stars in the NBA, like Anthony Edwards, Brandon Ingram, Austin Reaves, and Jaren Jackson Jr., among many others. They may be the deepest roster, but they’ll face some NBA superstars representing their country too.
The three biggest names expected to compete are Luka Doncic for Slovenia, Giannis Antetokounmpo for Greece, and the reigning Finals MVP, Nikola Jokic for Serbia. Team USA is expected to triumph based on depth, but Serbia, Greece, and Slovenia are also tipped for possible victory based on the incredible star talent leading their nations.
