Dennis Rodman earned millions in the NBA after becoming one of the best rebounders and defenders the league has ever seen. He was a part of the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls‘ successes in his career, winning five championships.

But when he was younger, Rodman was far from being a massive prospect or anything of the sort. He recently opened up about being homeless for three years before he got into basketball.

“Oh yeah, I was homeless for like two or three years,” Dennis Rodman said on Vlad TV. “It’s a trippy story man. It’s like wow… Amazingly, that happened to me and wow, here I am today doing stuff like this.”

Rodman told a story about being noticed by college recruiters, saying, “It was more like, when you go from the projects, having a garbage bag… It’s all good. That was like one of those breakthrough moments you have in your life, right? And that’s what happened.

“These two guys came and knocked on the door and like, they asked, ‘Is Dennis Rodman here?’ I said, ‘No, he’s not here.’ Although I’m standing right there. I asked them to shut the door but they knocked again, so I said, ‘Yeah, that’s who I am.’

“And I thought I was going to prison. You got two white guys in suits and sh*t… ‘What I do now?’ But those two were coaches from Southeastern Oklahoma and they came and wanted me to go try out for the team.”

Dennis Rodman played for Southeastern Oklahoma State for three years before being drafted in the second round of the NBA. The rest, as they say, is history. He led the league in rebounding seven times, won five titles with two teams, was named a two-time All-Star, and won the Defensive Player Of The Year Award twice as well.

Dennis Rodman Had A Very Rough Childhood

When he was younger, Dennis Rodman’s father left his family, and he grew up with his sisters and mother. Rodman lived in a tough neighborhood in Texas and was often bullied as a youngster. His mother eventually kicked him out of the house for not having a job following high school.

Rodman’s childhood influenced him heavily, the man himself admitted that he was arrested over 100 times for various incidents. The fact that he became who he did despite his tough upbringing is a testament to his greatness, though. And no one has ever come close to being quite like Dennis Rodman again.
