The New York Knicks are parting ways with veteran point guard Derrick Rose, a respected and admired voice in the team’s locker room.

Rose has been around for a while, going from being a bonafide superstar to a role player trying to mentor the younger guys on his team. The Knicks are set to make some win-now moves, and cutting ties with Rose is one of them, as they declined their $15.6 million option for next year.

“Knicks will not exercise option on Derrick Rose’s contract. Rose was beloved by Thibs and the organization, had a diminished role on the court but was a pro throughout his benching, a voice in the locker room, and this will give him a chance to explore available opportunities,” Steve Popper of Newsday Sports writes.

Rose didn’t have many opportunities to play this season, averaging 24.5 minutes per game last season and barely clocking 12.5 minutes per outing this season. The point guard’s performance dipped, as he went from 12.0 to 5.6 points per game too.

Now, the former NBA MVP is ready to find a new challenge in the league. Rose can surely help a contender or a team trying to compete for a playoff spot this upcoming season.

The Knicks, on the other hand, are trying to make moves that will get them over the hump and compete for championships for the foreseeable future.

Derrick Rose Had A Diminished Role On Knicks Last Season

Rose landed in New York set to compete for big things, but the Knicks have mostly gotten younger, and his participation with the team has decreased a lot. Tom Thibodeau still loves and respects him, but knowing how strict he is with his rotations, Rose didn’t have more space on the team.

So much so that fans repeatedly chanted Rose’s name late in games to see him play for a few minutes. The Knicks are going in a different direction now, which makes this decision completely understandable.

Now, it remains to be seen how many teams will join the Rose’s sweepstakes this summer.
