The San Antonio Spurs have drafted generational superstars with their last two No. 1 overall picks, Tim Duncan and David Robinson. And many expect they have acquired the next big NBA superstar after drafting Victor Wembanyama first in the 2023 Draft.

Wembanyama is arguably the most hyped prospect since LeBron James, having been spoken about incessantly since last year. And he will now be coached by one of the greatest coaches of all time, Gregg Popovich, who had this to say about his excitement at the prospect of mentoring a young Wembaynama.

“I’m very excited. You don’t want me to jump up and down, do you? Put on a show? I’d do a somersault, but I’d be out for three months,” Popovich said.

During his long tenure as Head Coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Pop has become popular for his witty and slightly dry comments in any situation. This one is no different, he is probably tired of answering questions about Wembanyama considering the amount of hype around him.

The hype is deserved, too, Victor Wembanyama promises to be something the NBA has never seen before. Standing at 7’5, the Frenchman has shown incredible range when it comes to shooting and unstoppable moves in the paint, both offensively and defensively.

Playing in the LNB Pro A League for Metropolitans 92, Wembanyama won the scoring title and led the league in blocks in 2022-23. He was also named MVP of the league for his efforts. In 34 games, Wembanyama averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.7 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game. He is the complete package, and under Pop’s tutelage, should be a shoo-in for the Rookie Of The Year award.

Victor Wembanyama Seems Like He Is Ready To Take On The NBA

However talented a player may be, or whatever they may have achieved outside the NBA, all cease to matter once they make it to the league. All eyes are on Wembanyama to see what he can do when he finally takes the floor during a real game in the world’s toughest basketball league.

But far from seeming nervous, Victor Wembanyama has already claimed that he feels no pressure despite the massive expectations placed on him. It seems he’s not too worried about being stopped by opposing players either. His confidence is a good sign, but the rest is now up to him and the Spurs. If they can make it work, this might just be another No. 1 pick that brings championships to San Antonio.
