Chris Paul has earned a reputation around the league during his 18-season NBA career. The veteran point guard is one of the most impactful players in the league but also one of the most annoying stars to deal with, according to many.
The Golden State Warriors learned that firsthand in 2019 when they clashed with the Houston Rockets in the Second Round of the playoffs. After they beat the Rockets in six games, several players chanted ‘F**k Chris Paul’ as they entered the locker room.
“This is what I remember: I am in the hallway outside the Warriors’ locker room as they’re coming off the court. First off, even though they were three-time champions at that point, they celebrated winning that series and eliminating the Rockets on their homecourt without Kevin Durant, probably akin to as if they had won the Western Conference for the first time,” Brian Windhorst of ESPN recalled on the Hoops Collective podcast (3:30 mark).
Ironically, as life works in mysterious ways, Paul is now a member of the Warriors, set to win that longed-for ring with the Dubs.
“They were just short of dumping water on each other, that’s how excited they were. As they were running down the hallway to the locker room, they were shouting down the hall towards the Rockets’ locker room, “f**k Chris Paul! F**k Chris Paul!” They were done with him by then, and here we are four short years later, Chris Paul is a Warrior,” he added, via Redditor “iksnet.”
Tim McMahon adds that they were probably done with the narrative of the Rockets beating the Warriors if Chris Paul didn’t get injured in 2018. CP3 revealed that the Rockets had that one goal in mind: beating the Dubs. Sadly, they couldn’t complete the job, starring in one of the worst collapses the NBA has seen in recent times.
This is water under the bridge now, as Paul played for the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Phoenix Suns after his Rockets stint finished. He even reached the NBA Finals in 2021 but is yet to win that elusive championship.
Chris Paul Says He’s Excited To Join The Golden State Warriors
Paul is one of the best point guards in NBA history, and even at 38, he can be very helpful for the Warriors. Not everybody thinks this is a winning move from the Dubs, but Paul can still bring good things to the table. The Warriors, however, won’t waive Paul and will try to make a championship run with him.
He’s due about $31 million for the 2023-24 NBA season. After playing in 1,214 regular-season games and 149 playoff duels, he’s had plenty of experience to help a team looking to win its fifth championship in nine years. Last season, he averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists with the Phoenix Suns.
Paul can finally become an NBA champion, but the Dubs must make more moves to enter the new season in condition to compete for the title. CP3 says he’s excited to join this team, and that should make fans dream about his partnership with Stephen Curry.
