The Boston Celtics recently made headlines after landing Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team trade with the Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies.
The Celtics are the clear winners of this trade, as they received two first-round draft picks from the Grizzlies alongside getting Porzingis from the Wizards. Porzingis averaged 23.2 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 2.7 APG in the 2022-23 NBA season. The 2023-24 season is a championship or bust for the team.
If the Celtics manage to win the 2024 NBA Championship, they could end up spending $813 million the next summer. Let’s assume that Porzingis posts a stat line of 20 points and 10 rebounds throughout the season while helping the Celtics win the NBA title.
The 27-year-old would want a max extension from the franchise for his services. As of now, Porzingis has opted into his $36 million player option for the upcoming season. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the former fourth overall draft pick will be eligible to sign a two-year $77 million extension, starting July 06.
If Porzingis were to opt-in to his contract, he would be eligible to sign a 2 year $77M extension (starting July 6).
That is the maximum allowed in the next 6 months.
There is no restriction if the extension decreases in year 1. https://t.co/k86wCyEFnm

However, if he waits for another six months, the value of his potential contract could reach $200 million over five years. On top of that, let’s not forget that both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are eligible for a supermax contract extension.
Brown is eligible to sign a five-year $295 million extension this summer. But considering he still has one-year $28.5 million left on his current contract, the Celtics may wait until 2024 to sign the new contract.
Jayson Tatum, on the other hand, can sign a five-year $318 million supermax extension in 2024. Tatum currently has three years left on his current contract, with a player option in the third year. The 25-year-old will most likely opt out of his player option for the 2025-26 season so his new supermax extension can start.
All things considered, the Celtics could make a $813 million commitment to three players in the summer of 2024. To be honest, it would all be worth it if the trio could lead the franchise to championship No. 18.
Are The Celtics Favorites To Win The 2024 NBA Championship?
The trio of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis is an excellent core heading into the new season.
The C’s starting lineup could be Malcolm Brogdon (G), Jaylen Brown (G), Jayson Tatum (F), Kristaps Porzingis (F), and Robert Williams III (C). Along with that, the team will have Derrick White, Al Horford, Blake Griffin, and other quality role players off the bench.
Keeping that in mind, the Celtics should not only reach the 2024 NBA Finals but also win it. They are undoubtedly the best team in the Eastern Conference right now.
