The Phoenix Suns shocked the NBA community when it was reported that they waived veteran point guard Chris Paul.

Paul, 38, had an underwhelming postseason run plagued by injuries. With Paul being available on the market, Sam Quinn of ‘CBS Sports’ thinks it’ll make perfect sense for the Los Angeles Lakers to sign him. He interestingly suggested that the Lakers should also keep D’Angelo Russell on the roster.

“Chris Paul and D’Angelo Russell would be a weirdly appealing package deal for the Lakers if they could swing both of them,” he tweeted.

“D’Lo eats the regular-season innings, and then Paul becomes the playoff point guard,” Quinn thinks.

Previously, it was believed that D’Angelo Russell would be shipped off by the Lakers following a poor series against the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals. D’Lo averaged just 6.3 PPG, 2.0 RPG, and 3.5 APG while shooting 32.3% from the field and 13.3% from downtown.

But recent rumors suggest that D’Lo could get a contract worth $18-$20 million annually from the Purple and Gold.

As for Paul, he had an underwhelming run in the 2023 playoffs, averaging 12.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 7.4 APG in seven games. CP3 missed all but two games vs. the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Semifinals due to a groin injury.

The 38-year-old may be past his prime, but he can still be a valuable addition to the Lakers, who are in search of an elite point guard to run the offense for LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

The Phoenix Suns Are Trying To Figure Out A New Deal With Chris Paul

Following the news about Chris Paul getting waived by the Suns, he is gauging league-wide interest.

But it seems like Paul’s stint with the Suns is yet to be finished. NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski revealed the organization is trying to find a way to financially keep Paul on the roster.

“I’m told that the Phoenix Suns and Chris Paul had a series of conversations today to start discussing his future in Phoenix, including the possibility that the team could use the waive-and-stretch provision on his contract prior to the June 28th date to guarantee his contract,” Woj revealed. “… Right now, Phoenix would like to find a way to financially keep Chris Paul on this roster.”

Chris Paul has a partly guaranteed team option for $30.8 million for the 2023-24 NBA season. If the Suns waive him, they could stretch his remaining $15.8 million contract over multiple years.

But it will require the two sides to renegotiate a new contract. Meanwhile, interest for CP3 is still there, but not with the contract he is on right now.
