Donovan Mitchell Was In Awe Of Madison Square Garden When He Faced The Knicks In The Playoffs: “I Was Geeked”

Donovan Mitchell had some really flattering things to say about Madison Square Garden after playing there against the New York Knicks in the playoffs.

Donovan Mitchell had an excellent first season as a part of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was traded there by the Utah Jazz, despite a lot of links to the New York Knicks, his hometown team.

As fate would have it, Mitchell’s Cavaliers faced off against the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. Despite being favored to win, they lost. And Donovan Mitchell has since opened up on what he felt while playing at Madison Square Garden.

“Bro, for Game 3 when we came out for warmups and all that… the noise, the fans,” Mitchell said. “When they did the anthem, bruh, that sh*t was crazy. Like when they did the anthem, I was like, ‘Damn, this sh*t is jumping.’ I was geeked.”

Donovan Mitchell is from New York, and it’s clear that he feels some type of way about the Knicks and Madison Square Garden. This isn’t the best for Cleveland because if their star feels this way about another franchise and their home arena, then it doesn’t bode well for when he becomes a free agent.

Donovan Mitchell is a professional, and he has given it his all for the Cavaliers. He had a 71-point game and averaged 28.3 points per game this season. But it’s hard to ignore the signs in terms of his long-term future, it really feels like just a matter of time before he becomes a Knick.

Donovan Mitchell Thought It Was A Done Deal That He Would Join The Knicks But It Fell Through

The New York Knicks were willing to offer a substantial package for Donovan Mitchell to the Utah Jazz last offseason if reports are to be believed. And the situation had moved so far along that the man himself thought he would be moving to New York.

“I was told it was RJ (Barrett) and hella (draft) picks. That’s what I heard. And I thought that was happening. I thought that was it. I’m there (on the East Coast) all offseason. I’m there in the summer.”

Mitchell has been the consummate professional on the surface when it comes to this, but it is hard to ignore that he does seem to have a soft spot for New York. The Cavaliers are in a great place with the talent they have right now, but their future isn’t as certain as it could be.
