Last night’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers was arguably the most important regular season game of the season for both teams, but the Clippers walked out with the win.

Charles Barkley saw the Lakers come out flat and fail to win the game, after which he claimed that Kawhi Leonard is the king of LA.

“The Lakers ain’t gonna make no run… Kawhi Leonard ran them out of the building last night… Kawhi sent them a message last night. He’s the king of LA.”

Kawhi Leonard definitely deserves credit for what he has been able to do for the Clippers. He also played the entire second half, a period where the Lakers outscored the Clippers and looked like the stronger team at points. He has led by example for the team since Paul George got hurt, and his performance last night likely sealed a top-6 seed for the Clippers.

Who’s The King Of LA?

It’s hard to argue against Kawhi Leonard when the Clippers have 11 consecutive wins over the Lakers. The Lakers have only beaten the Clippers twice since 2019 but have won a championship, unlike the Clips, who haven’t even been to the Finals yet. Both teams missed the playoffs last year as well, so there is no meaningful success that the Clips can claim over the Lakers right now.

Kawhi Leonard cannot be the king of LA if he hasn’t brought a championship to a city that is known for championships. Even if LeBron James hasn’t won 5 titles for the Lakers like Kobe Bryant or Magic Johnson, he has won at least 1 title in a year where the Clippers were favorites to do so. If Kawhi hasn’t ascended to the crown in LA, how can he be the king? Maybe he changes that this year, but at least he can claim bragging rights over LeBron in terms of their head-to-head battles.
