The Dallas Mavericks were expected to take a step forward in 2022-23 after a Western Conference Finals run last season. Instead, the Mavericks may actually end up missing the playoffs despite employing a 24-year-old superstar in Luka Doncic.

Kyrie Irving spoke about the Mavs’ playoff chances after their loss to the Philadelphia 76ers sunk them to 37-40 on the season, solidifying their hold over the 11th spot in the West.

Before the trade deadline, the Mavericks were 4 games above .500 and outpacing the likes of the Lakers and Warriors in the standings. Acquiring Kyrie Irving impacted a fragile locker room, as the loss of Dorian Finney-Smith meant that there is not a single defensive specialist on the Mavs roster.

Dallas has gone 6-14 in their last 20 games and it looks like they are headed for a long offseason with no playoff basketball for the fans.

The Dallas Mavericks Let Incompetence Ruin Their Season

The amount of horrible moves the Mavs front office has made in the last couple of years is baffling. From the moment they traded Harrison Barnes away for nothing to the trade for Kyrie, no move has worked for Dallas. They don’t have a second-round pick for the next 7 years due to their failed trades to acquire the likes of JJ Redick, Josh Richardson, and many others during Luka’s run.

The Kristaps Porzingis trade is hurting them the most. They still owe the Knicks a pick from that trade, with their 2023 pick being top-ten protected. Getting rid of Porzingis last season also saw the Mavs take on one of the worst contracts in the NBA with Davis Bertans. They also lost Jalen Brunson for nothing, who’s emerged as an All-Star this season.

All these roster mistakes coupled with the apathetic coaching of Jason Kidd have been a recipe for disaster. If Luka Doncic wants out of Dallas in the future, it’ll be very easy for everyone to point the finger at all the mistakes Mark Cuban made in the few years he had Luka on his roster, as the mistakes definitely outweigh anything else the franchise has achieved.
