LeBron James is still one of the best players in the league today, and there’s no doubt that his longevity is unprecedented in basketball. There has never been a player that has managed to play at a superstar level for this long. Currently, LeBron James is averaging 27.8 PPG, 8.1 RPG, and 6.6 APG for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Erik Spoelstra notably coached LeBron James during the superstar’s time with the Miami Heat, and he has witnessed James’ greatness firsthand. Recently, Erik Spoelstra compared him to NFL quarterback Tom Brady, claiming LeBron James could play until he is 50 years old. Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald relayed the news.
“It’s crazy. He’s redefining what’s possible with human performance. The way he looks, it looks like he’s the Tom Brady of the NBA, that he could just keep on going. His athleticism is still there. But if he ever only had to rely on his brain, he could play until he’s 50 and still be effective and move the needle.”
In recent years, LeBron James has shattered a number of longevity-based records. In fact, there’s a chance that he could end up passing the all-time scoring record that is currently held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He should be able to do it this season, and it’ll be a monumental occasion when that happens.
LeBron James Has Also Compared Himself To Tom Brady
Erik Spoelstra is far from the only person that has noticed the similarities between LeBron James and Tom Brady. In fact, LeBron James himself claimed that he and Tom Brady are “the same people”, noting that they are both “out there for championships”.
As he dressed in the visitors’ locker room in the arena he knows so well, and the Lakers sitting in 13th place in the West, James emphatically insisted Tuesday he is still playing for rings.
“I’m still playing at an extremely high level,” he said. “I’m not out there to f—- around. What would I do that for? Me and (Tom) Brady. We’re the same people. We out there for championships.”
Though LeBron James may still want to win championships, that might not be possible with the current iteration of the Los Angeles Lakers. James deleting his Tweet about never missing the postseason again shows that he is aware of the fact that the Lakers may not make it to the playoffs this season.
With that being said, things could definitely change in the future for LeBron James if the Los Angeles Lakers make a move, or if he ends up leaving to go to another franchise. Hopefully, the Lakers’ front office can surround him with the pieces he needs to win, and we’ll see what happens ahead of the trade deadline.
