The 2000s were probably one of the most competitive eras of basketball. Not only did we have multiple quality guards like Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson, but we also had some of the best forwards of All-Time with the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, and Dirk Nowitzki.
But perhaps one of the most successful players of the decade was San Antonio Spurs legend and Mr. Fundamental, Tim Duncan. Playing for the Spurs, Duncan was one of the most consistent superstars of his generation. While he did not have the flashiest plays in comparison to other players, as his nickname suggests, Duncan was the perfect forward for some.
While career averages of 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists are certainly not eye-popping, it is easy to forget that Timmy played a whopping 19 seasons in the league.
If these numbers do not sway fans and convince fans of Duncan’s influence in the game, this incredible stat might.

Playing against perhaps some of the best players stopped two dynasties. Facing off against Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, Duncan and the Spurs beat the Lakers who won three championships in a row, in the 2003 NBA Finals. Not only that, Duncan and Co. stopped the Heat three-peat led by beating the Big 3 of LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade in the 2014 Finals.
While many players fizzle out by the age of 38, Duncan remained an All-Star and ended up with 15 All-Star appearances in his career. Apart from his 5-championships and 3 Finals MVP trophies, the 6’11” power forward won 2 MVP trophies as well.
One of the other incredible feats that Duncan had was that he made the playoffs every time he played in the league. While he did not have much impact in his last season playing reduced minutes, among the Big 3 of Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and him, Duncan was clearly the biggest star and the constant danger man.
While it is still debatable, claims of Duncan being the best player of the 2000s over Kobe Bryant might not be outlandish.
