Coming into this offseason, it was widely believed that Celtics star Jaylen Brown would sign his five-year supermax extension in the first week that it was possible. Interestingly, now two weeks into July, Brown has yet to reach terms with the Cs on a new deal.
To say alarm bells are bringing would be a step too far, but there is a general concern among Celtics fans regarding what the hold up is for this new contract. On Friday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski provided the latest details on the situation and explained why there have been some obstacles in negotiations.
“It’s going to take more time Jaylen Brown and his agent, they’ve been talking with Brad Stevens and the Celtics. Brown is leaving the country on players association business for a period of time and they’re expected to re-engage again when he gets back. This is a deal that would be the richest contract in NBA history, worth up to $304 million. So these sides around going to continue to talk and they have a lot of runway this summer to get to a deal.”
Signing Jaylen to $304 million is considered a massive overpay by some, but the Celtics don’t have an alternative to the offense and defense he provides.
Could Celtics Join The Hunt For Lillard?
Some have theorized that the Jaylen deal could be taking time because the Cs are actively working to figure out how to swap him for Damian Lillard. On paper, the trade would be ideal for Boston, who have long searched for a star-level point guard. Jaylen could be a part of this deal if the Celtics want to put their package above the rest.
“When you look at the league and his stated preference is to win, and teams that have the assets and maybe the ability to get this done, the Boston Celtics have the ability to get this done,” said Ramona Shelburne. “As far as a team that can win and that actually has the assets to do it, they make a lot of sense.”
Naturally, the Celtics have been reluctant to include Jaylen in any trade talks, but I can see them making an exception for Dame.
For now, they are still out on the Lillard sweepstakes, and there’s no reason to believe a supermax extension won’t be agreed before training camp begins in September.
