Adrian Wojnarowski Warns That Damian Lillard Trade Drama Could Drag On For A Long Time

The entire NBA world seems fixated on the Damian Lillard sweepstakes, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for something to happen. While talks are ongoing on both sides, there is an undeniable lack of urgency in light of the fact that Lillard still has four years left on his deal.

So with the new season still months away and the trade deadline even further in the distance, it’s no surprise that both the Heat and Blazers have been described as unmotivated to strike a deal. Speaking on NBA Today, top-level insider Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed that this process could take a while.

“It could take months, it could take weeks,” said Woj. “I think there is an absence of a real deadline lurking on a Damian Lillard trade. There’s no trade deadline coming, there’s no NBA draft. There’s no July 1 free agency about to start. All those marks in the NBA calendar gives teams motivation and parameters to get big deals done. The next deadline for any of these teams is the start of training camp in late September. And so I think for the Portland Trail Blazers, they don’t want to rush into what they consider to be a bad deal. The Miami Heat, the team that is most motivated to try and trade for Damian Lillard, where he wants to end up, they don’t want to be in a situation where they are bidding against themselves.”

It may seem inevitable that Lillard ends up in South Beach, but it’s no secret that the Heat don’t have much to offer. Besides Tyler Herro and some first-round picks that don’t hold much value, they have nothing to offer Portland and it’s why we can expect the Blazers to wait this out until Miami (or some other team) steps up with a better deal.

Can Dame Win A Title In Miami?

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side and we’ve seen stars come to regret trad requests in the past. In the case of Dame, joining the heat seems like an ideal fit, but not everybody is convinced that it would work out.

“They won’t make it out of the first round. You got to understand how they got to the championship this year,” said Paul Pierce. “A lot of this had to do with their depth and guys playing way above their pay grade. Gabe, Martin, these guys were averaging 20 points on Boston, we ain’t never seen them do that. Then you have Duncan Robinson. If you get Dame, they’re gone… you gonna have to gut that team.”

With Lillard, Butler, and Bam, it might not matter too much which guys are surrounding them, but the Heat seem to work better with depth and if they’re not careful, they could it all in favor of top-end talent.
