In a recent interview with Rachel Nichols on the show Headliners, NBA legend Allen Iverson expressed his desire to share a backcourt with a current NBA guard, and his pick was none other than the Dallas Mavericks’ Slovenian sensation, Luka Doncic. Despite standing at just six feet tall, Iverson was known for being one of the most unstoppable scorers in NBA history.

“I would want it to be Luka…Because he’s a big point guard. I can still play the two. He can guard the two, I can guard the one. I think it’d be just deadly.”

When asked about his ideal current NBA guard to team up with, Iverson didn’t hesitate to name Luka Doncic. He highlighted Doncic’s stature as a big point guard and emphasized the potential dynamic partnership.

Iverson led the Sixers to the 2001 NBA Finals on his own, where they faced the formidable duo of Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, resulting in a defeat for Philadelphia.

The Dallas Mavericks currently boast success with the pairing of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, showcasing the potential of a dominant backcourt. Iverson envisioned playing alongside Doncic, pointing out the relief it would bring to his playmaking responsibilities. With Luka’s exceptional passing skills, Iverson could have focused more on scoring, leveraging his innate ability to put the ball in the basket.

Imagining the synergy between Iverson and Doncic, whether transported to Iverson’s Sixers in the ’90s and 2000s or placing a peak Iverson in the current Mavericks lineup, the prospect of a backcourt tandem of Allen Iverson and Luka Doncic is described as potentially one of the best, if not the best, in NBA history.

Luka Doncic And Allen Iverson Would Have Trouble On The Defensive End

Luka Doncic and Allen Iverson, both known for their offensive prowess, would likely face significant challenges on the defensive end if paired in a backcourt tandem. Despite their remarkable scoring abilities, averaging 28.1 PPG and 26.7 PPG respectively over their careers, their defensive capabilities have been less prominent.

Luka Doncic, with a career-high average of 32.4 PPG in his peak season, has demonstrated an exceptional offensive skill set, utilizing his size and playmaking abilities to dominate opponents. However, his defensive performance has often been criticized. While Luka’s size provides him with some advantages, he has not been regarded as a standout defender. The current 2023-24 season sees Luka averaging an impressive 33.7 PPG, showcasing his offensive prowess.

Similarly, Allen Iverson, whose peak season averaged 33.0 PPG, was a scoring machine during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers. Iverson’s diminutive stature at six feet did not hinder his scoring ability, but it did pose challenges on the defensive end. Iverson was known for his tenacity and heart, but he wasn’t considered an elite defender.

The potential backcourt pairing of Luka Doncic and Allen Iverson would undoubtedly be a scoring spectacle on the offensive side of the ball. However, their defensive limitations could be exploited by opponents. In a league where two-way players are highly valued, the defensive challenges posed by this hypothetical duo might present obstacles in their pursuit of overall team success. Teams facing Doncic and Iverson might target them defensively, aiming to exploit their perceived weaknesses and disrupt their offensive rhythm.
