Andre Drummond’s latest thoughts on prioritizing mental health have to be the best advice for those going through tumultuous times. The Chicago Bulls star kept it as candid and relatable as possible.
“We’ve looked at as superheroes like nothing really bothers us and that we don’t have a life outside of the game,” Drummond said, according to Chicago Tribune.
“People need to understand that we do have personal lives outside of the game of basketball and it becomes taxing at times. That superhero cape we have on has to come off at some point in time. It’s OK to ask for help. It’s OK to feel. It’s OK to be emotional. We’re all men, but we have to be OK with having feelings.”
Earlier, the center had taken a step back from the team for one game after taking to social media to announce that he was deleting the apps and changing his contact number.
“Time to focus on my mental health,” Drummond wrote. “If you too are struggling with your mental health, you are not alone. It’s okay to ask for help.” The move saw massive support pour in from the big man, not just from his team, but from the NBA community as well.
Kevin Love And DeMar DeRozan Are Some Of The NBA Players Who Have Been Vocal About Mental Health Issues
Over the years, NBA players have been growing more expressive about the importance of mental health, and one of the first players to do that was Drummond’s own Bulls teammate, DeMar DeRozan. In an interview in 2018, he spoke about how depression was one of the issues he battled with.
Miami Heat big man Kevin Love was the other player who spoke about how he went through a panic attack during a crucial game against the Atlanta Hawks.
Together, DeRozan and Love even played their part by narrating their experiences in an NBA PSA that talks about mental health issues and keeping the world aware, instead of looking at it as a stigma.
The NBA has been thoroughly supportive of players going through tumultuous times, and Drummond’s story comes as an example of how these athletes are not taking stress for granted.
Here’s sincerely hoping that Drummond emerges stronger and healthier, as the Bulls stake their claim for a postseason berth.
