Andrew Bogut Confirms The Warriors Asked Him To Convince Patty Mills To Sign Last Season, But He Chose The Nets Because He Thought They Would Win The Championship

Andrew Bogut recently revealed that the Golden State Warriors tried to get him to convince Patty Mills to sign with them last season. But Mills chose the Brooklyn Nets instead because he thought they had a better chance at winning the NBA title.

The NBA trade deadline has passed, and now the only way that teams can improve their roster is by signing players that are free agents or have been bought out. The buyout market often has a lot of veterans that can provide value to teams that are hoping to make a championship run. And for those players, finding the situation with the most likelihood of winning a ring is the agenda.

Every season, even before the season starts, free agents will choose the team they will sign for based on their chances of winning a ring. And while this works out for some, many players make the wrong choice. Considering the implosion of their Big 3 recently, players like Patty Mills, that joined the Brooklyn Nets last season, count among those that made a poor decision.

Patty Mills is already an NBA champion, he was on the roster for the San Antonio Spurs when they won it all in 2014. And when he joined the Brooklyn Nets at the start of the 2021-22 season, he was likely hoping to add another to his collection. But there was another interested team, and if he had chosen them, he might have had another ring to his name by now.

Andrew Bogut Says He Tried To Get Patty Mills To Join The Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors won their 4th championship in 8 years last season, and it seems they were interested in having Patty Mills for that run. Andrew Bogut recently shared the story on his Rogue Bogues podcast of how the team tried to get him to convince his fellow Australian to join them, but it didn’t work out, thanks to Patty’s poor choice.

“Patty (Mills), probably the worst week he’s had this season… Life’s a bit harder I guess when KD and Kyrie aren’t in that lineup for Patty… And a little tidbit for our listeners, the sliding door moment.

Couple seasons ago, when Patty was a free agent, the Golden State Warriors reached out to yours truly and were asking me to get a hold of Patty to get him to sign for that mid-level. But he ended up making the deal with Brooklyn thinking he had a better championship chance. Hindsight, would have had one chip with the Warriors last season.”

Patty Mills is 34 now, so he still has a chance to join a contender the next time he is a free agent. And with the way things panned out with the Nets, he will surely make a more conscious choice based on which teams seem stable enough to win the NBA championship next time.
