After five years of the Trae Young era, the Atlanta Hawks may finally be ready to part ways with their franchise point guard. At the very least, according to Shams Charania, the Hawks will choose between Trae Young and his backcourt teammate, Dejounte Murray.

“Atlanta this summer, a lot of eyes are on them. They’re. They have two guys, two point guards that they feel might not mesh. So when you look at the summer, they’re gonna have to make a decision. A lot of teams are keeping an eye on Trae Young on the marketplace this year…”

Trae has been in rumors for months now and it was ramping up a lot closer to the deadline. While a trade never happened, the Hawks may still be leaning toward splitting up the star duo this summer in an effort to re-tool and re-shape a struggling roster. After bringing the guards together less than two years ago, the Hawks had high hopes for what they could do in the Eastern Conference.

Unfortunately, the Murray trade just hasn’t panned out like the Hawks were hoping for and the team has stayed mediocre in just about every conceivable way. Even after firing former coach Nate McMillan, Atlanta continues to display inconsistency at every turn and the only option left to break the cycle is trading one of their two All-Stars guards.

The question now is, which one will it be? If the Hawks trade Trae, they lose their identity but they’ll probably get a massive haul in return. For Dejounte Murray, the return will not be nearly as lucrative but they’d get to keep their franchise guy for a little while longer. No matter which they choose, it will have an impact on the market this summer and could very well have an impact on the title race next season.

The Best Potential Landing Spots For Young And Murray

Anything can happen between and free agency, but the Hawks are headed in the wrong direction and a trade seems imminent. With Trae Young and Dejounte Murray potentially on the market in a few months, we’re already hearing rumblings about teams preparing to make a pursuit.

In Los Angeles, the Lakers are one of the few teams who might consider either player this summer and both of them would provide a major boost for them in the backcourt. Of course, we know already that the Lakers plan to go star hunting this summer, and Trae Young is the perfect young star to welcome into the fold.

Meanwhile, the Miami Heat have been lurking all season long as a potential landing spot for the next star. Besides Klay Thompson, the Heat could also make a serious run for Trae Young and they might just have the assets to pull it off and acquire the guard they’ve been searching for.

Interestingly, the San Antonio Spurs have emerged as a potential suitor for Trae and they could make sense for Murray too. As Victor Wmebanyama beaks out into a star, the Spurs are acting with increasing intensity to increase the talent of their roster across the board.

No matter how it plays out this summer, the Hawks are sure to keep at least one of the star guards, and which one they trade will depend on the kind of offers that are on the table. For now, teams are still preparing for the pursuit and the Hawks still have to decide the fate of their basketball future.
