Jaylen Brown’s contract extension with the Boston Celtics has been one of the talking points this NBA offseason and after reports of the two parties inking an extension in the coming week doing the rounds, there has been another development that hints at the team’s optimistic of the guard extending his time with the franchise.
During Boston’s 2023 Summer League outing in Las Vegas, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens provided an update about the scenario. Per ClutchPoints:
“I can’t really talk about it but it’s been all good discussion. We want Jaylen to be here for a long, long time, and we’ve made that clear. We’re looking forward to all sitting down and we have time here. I probably shouldn’t say anything else, but I feel optimistic.”
The Celtics have been on the splurge and have made it clear that they intend to keep Brown in their ranks. After making the cut for the All-NBA team last season, he can make up to $295 million over five years via a supermax.
Should Boston manage to retain Brown as well, they will have a power trio of Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jayson Tatum. They will surely be one of the firm favorites in the running for a title.
Jaylen Brown Believes He Is Equal To Jayson Tatum
Per a recent report from Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, Jaylen Brown wants a player option on his next contract with the Celtics this offseason.
His co-star Jayson Tatum received a player option on his last extension, and the NBA insider noted that Brown wants one as well, as he sees himself as Tatum’s equal.
“In 2020, Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum received a fifth-year player option in his five-year, $195 million max extension. That option will allow Tatum to decline the fifth year of his deal next summer and become eligible for a more lucrative five-year extension after that. Or, he could simply opt out and become a free agent one year earlier, if he pleases. Brown has made it clear over the years that he views himself as Tatum’s equal rather than his sidekick, and it would be understandable for his camp to push for the player option that Tatum received.”
Brown averaged 26.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, and 3.5 APG in the 2022-23 regular season, and he has shown that he can rise in key moments of the game.
The Celtics have a decision to make, and all signs indicate they are making the right one with Brown.
