Up until a few days ago, the Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar held one of the biggest records in the history of the NBA. Kareem was the NBA’s all-time scoring leader for almost 40 years.
But on Tuesday night, LeBron James dethroned Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the player with the most points to his name in the history of the league. Since then many have congratulated James for his achievements. But at the same time, Kareem has been constantly in the news as well.
Former NBA superstar and current analyst Charles Barkley was among many who have appreciated Kareem’s greatness even before LeBron James broke the record.
Charles Barkley Shares Details About His First Meeting With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was not only one of the most dominant players of his time but also a part of the most influential people of his time. So meeting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is always a huge deal for NBA players.
Former NBA superstar Charles Barkley recently shared how his first meeting went with the legendary player in a recent interview with ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live.’
(Starts at 9:34)
“It wasn’t a good time…At the All-Star game, all the guys get together in a room beforehand. So Kareem is sitting in the corner, and I’m with like Bird, McHale, Karl Malone, and I say, ‘You know I’ve never met Kareem before.’ They are like, go over and say hello to him. And he’s over there sitting in the corner by himself with his head down, got a book. I walk over; I say, ‘Hey, Mr. Jabbar, can I talk to you?’. He looks up. ‘I’m reading.’ I turned around, these fools laughing at me. They set me up…I was like, ‘Ok’!”
Barkley’s first meeting with Kareem didn’t go as well as he thought it would. Although he will forever remember that meeting with him, certainly not in a way the Philadelphia 76ers legend may have built it up in his head.
