Chris Paul will be playing alongside some of his biggest rivals of the last decade, as the veteran point guard was traded to the Golden State Warriors ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Paul spoke to Mark Medina of The Sporting Tribune and spoke about his new association with the Warriors and wanting to help the group win and how he fits on the roster.
“I’m excited. I know I’ve been sort of the sworn enemy for a long time. But I cannot wait to be there, and I cannot wait to help them win… The fortunate part is I’ve played for 18 years and I’ve figured it out… I’m trying to live and enjoy my summer as much as possible. I’ll worry about all of that different type of stuff when it’s time.”
The Warriors gave up Jordan Poole in the deal, as the 20-point bench scorer’s playoff failures and beef in the locker room spelled the end of his time as a Warriors. While Paul can’t score as Poole did, he will bring a measured and tactical approach to the Warriors’ bench if he ends up playing in the sixth-man role behind Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
Can Chris Paul Adjust To Coming Off The Bench?
The likelihood of Paul starting over Klay Thompson in the backcourt is slim. CP3 and Curry would make for a small backcourt that will be a defensive liability, so it’ll be better for the franchise to stagger their minutes. The Warriors’ bench was among the worst-performing units of last season, being a staggering -17.7 when Curry isn’t on the court.
Paul has never come off the bench in his career, having 18 years of experience as a starter and heading into his 19th season. Adjustment is inevitable now that Paul is playing on a dynastic unit like the Warriors, as he has to assimilate into their system instead of them changing to suit Paul’s style of play.
