D’Angelo Russell joined the Los Angeles Lakers via trade at the deadline this season. He was part of the many moves that helped revamp the Lakers roster and ended up with them improving dramatically towards the end of the season.

D’Angelo Russell was not having the best time on the Minnesota Timberwolves and has been able to show out a lot more since returning to the Lakers. And he recently tweeted something that can easily be perceived as a shot at his former employers.

“If you can’t change the people around you, change the people around you,” Russell wrote on Twitter, which went viral.

Despite splashing on a massive trade last offseason that got them Rudy Gobert, the Minnesota Timberwolves haven’t improved too much as a team. They got bounced in the first round of the playoffs again after making it through the play-in tournament. And D’Angelo Russell doesn’t have many fond memories of his time with the franchise, it would seem.

Things have changed drastically since he joined the Lakers; they are now competing for a chance to make the NBA Finals. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are the stars on the team, but D’Angelo Russell has been an able third option, contributing alongside other roster members like Austin Reaves, Lonnie Walker IV, and Rui Hachimura. It seems like he has found his place with this group.

D’Angelo Russell Implied That The Minnesota Timberwolves Held Him Back

The star guard looks like he is having a lot of fun with the Los Angeles Lakers, especially if his press conference shenanigans are anything to go by. And even on the court, his impact has improved, he has since suggested that his former team held him back and didn’t allow him to play like he could.

“I felt like I was held back there, honestly. I just kind of had to be the third option. Some nights, I was a little more aggressive and was kind of being held back. So to be in a position now where I can kind of thrive and be aggressive and it gets guys going, and where the team reflects off of anybody with that type of energy, it’s fun.”

The Timberwolves have historically been an organization that has struggled to win consistently and those things take time to change. If the D’Angelo Russell situation says anything, it’s that perhaps the Wolves need to work a little more and change a little more.
