As a young and exciting Western Conference contender, the Memphis Grizzlies had everything going for them just a few months ago. But thanks to repeated situations with franchise star Ja Morant, Memphis is stuck dealing with the fallout.

After Morant was caught flashing his piece on social media, former Kings star DeMarcus Cousins felt compelled to chime in with his own opinion and blasted the Grizzlies for their lack of veteran presence.

The Grizzlies do have some older guys on the roster, but they are still one of the youngest teams in basketball. With an average age of 24.27, Memphis just narrowly beats even tanking teams like the Thunder, Spurs, Rockets, and Magic.

In truth, it seems the biggest obstacle for this Grizzlies team is themselves and they have a lot of growing up to do before they can make a serious run in the West.

Are The Grizzlies Ready To Compete For A Title?

On paper, Memphis has almost everything they need to bring home the Larry O’Brien trophy. Despite his recent string of activities, Ja has proven to be a reliable bucket-getter on the court, and his fire and passion have ignited a lot of excitement about the Grizzlies’ future.

For now, though, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Memphis lacks veteran role-players to keep the guys in check and establish a culture of accountability in the locker room.

Of course, it would probably help if they put all the trash-talk on hold until they make a meaningful playoff run to show for it.

“They were talking about dynasty and all of that. You can’t talk dynasty when you haven’t won before,” said Klay Thompson on the Grizzlies. “I thought that was premature talk. I don’t think people realize how hard that is. The commitment, the sacrifice, the faith. You gotta sacrifice your body. I thought that was premature talk…”

Only time will tell if the Grizzlies can stabilize their season, but they desperately need some veteran leadership to get back on track.

Maybe DeMarcus Cousins should volunteer himself for the role…
