Joel Embiid was having a terrific first-round series against the Brooklyn Nets before something changed in Game 3 and now the player won’t play in today’s game.
This was already concerning for Sixers fans, and now Doc Rivers has provided a bad update on this situation.
“They checked his knee out right after the game because he was complaining about soreness behind the knee, which is always a scary thing when it’s behind the knee with players. And there was swelling already, which was way too early and so we did the MRI…”
“As a coach, I hate those three letters because it never comes out well. It just feels like that whenever we tell a coach, ‘Hey, we’re going to get an MRI.’ It doesn’t turn out well most of the time and this one did not.”
Doc Rivers said “I’m not sure” how long Joel Embiid will be out.

This is terrible news for the Sixers, who looked comfortable against the Nets in the first three games of the series. Even when things went bad, Embiid showed up and led the way to the in.
Without their superstar, a second-round series would be incredibly hard for them. Embiid is, according to many, the 2023 NBA MVP, and losing him at this stage of the season would be really painful for the Sixers.
This injury could spark many changes within the organization, including a potential James Harden exit. He’s been linked with a move back to the Houston Rockets if the Sixers fail to win this season.
Joel Embiid Sprained His Knee In Game 3 Of The Series
During the controversial Game 3, Embiid picked up an injury and now the situation looks complex for his team. He sprained his knee ahead of a crucial Game 4 that could seal the deal for the Sixers.
James Harden and Tyrese Maxey have the responsibility to close this series out, but once they learn who’s waiting for them in the second round, the Sixers will need to play harder or find a way to accelerate Embiid’s recovery.
