Though Dwight Howard is now playing overseas in Taiwan, there is no doubt that he was once one of the most feared superstars in the NBA. He was an athletic phenom, who notably led the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009.
Once, we saw Dwight Howard claim that he had a better prime than Nikola Jokic. In a recent interview with Zion Olojede of Complex Sports, Dwight Howard explains why he made that statement.
“Yeah, of course. Obviously, people going to say Jokic can score. He got all those offensive skills. But at the same time, I was getting 38 and 20, 45-18, 19, 20, and I’m doing all this with twos. No threes, all twos. I’m doing this with lobs. I’m not getting a lot of post-up attempts like Jokic. He’s getting way more opportunities, I would say as far as to show his low post game and all that stuff. And I was just in a different era.”
In the segment, Howard also noted that people will point to Jokic’s diverse offensive skill set in this debate, but added that he knows “how dominant” he was and what he “could do”.
“So, people look at that and say, “Well, Jokic, he scores and does all this stuff.” And no offense, I think he’s great. I love Jokic. I don’t want people to think that I’m trying to hate even comparing, but I’m going to take myself. I know how dominant I was and I know what I could do with my skills. And on the defensive end and on the offensive end I was quick enough to get past everybody.”
There is no doubt that Dwight Howard was a two-way force in his prime, and it is fair to say that he has Nikola Jokic beat on the defensive side of basketball. Still, what a lot of people look at when evaluating players is the offensive side of the ball, and Nikola Jokic is clearly much better in that department.
From 2006 to 2014, Dwight Howard was a perennial All-Star, averaging 19.5 PPG, 13.3 RPG, and 2.3 BPG. Many forget just how good he was in his prime, and he has every right to be confident in himself.
Dwight Howard Wants To Come Back To The NBA
Even though he is not the superstar that he once was, there is no doubt that Dwight Howard can still contribute in the league. In fact, he previously claimed that he wants to help the Sacramento Kings win a title.
“I’m not retired from the NBA just yet,” Howard told Mark Haynes of The Observer. “I would love to help the Sacramento Kings contend for a title. Even though I believe their team is pretty much set.”
It remains to be seen if Dwight Howard will join the Sacramento Kings in the future. Hopefully, he gets an opportunity with them, and if not, perhaps another team can sign him.
