Michael Jordan had an insane mentality, but there were times when he was too harsh on his teammates because of it.
On top of that, Jordan lived a very happening life. As a result, many believe MJ will have a tough time playing in the social media era. But his former teammate, Scott Burrell, revealed in a conversation with Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype that Mike would change himself.
Alex Kennedy: “If Jordan played in today’s NBA and acted the same way, I wonder how people would respond. Videos of him riding his teammates would be posted on social media and things like that. Would Jordan’s style of leadership be accepted in today’s NBA?”
Scott Burrell: “That’s a good question. Well, MJ would change. Everybody changes with the times, So, he wouldn’t have been as strong, I’m sure, if there were cameras everywhere, following him second-to-second. But he would have been the same competitor. He might have done something [similar] behind closed doors, which means it’s now on the other player to say, ‘This is what he did,’ or, ‘I can’t take this!’ Then, that’s when MJ gets them traded. (laughs) So, I think things would happen the same maybe, but he would have changed in that he wouldn’t have done things in front of cameras. And if people had a problem with it, they would have asked to get traded, or he would have told them, ‘Trade them.'”
Michael Jordan always wanted to get the best out of his teammates. As a result, he didn’t refrain from berating them when required.
But in the social media era, the clips of such incidents would go viral within seconds, and it would tarnish MJ’s near-perfect image. Either way, Burrell believes Jordan would have found a way to change himself and adjust to this new era.
Michael Jordan Once Said He Would Survive In The Twitter Era
Getting adjusted to playing in the social media era is one thing, but flourishing in it is entirely different.
Keeping that in mind, Michael Jordan once admitted that he would have a tough time playing in this Twitter era.
“I don’t know if I could’ve survived in this Twitter [era], where you don’t have the privacy that you’d want and what seems to be very innocent can always be misinterpreted.”
The difference between the two eras can have a drastic impact on the legacy of a player in the NBA. With that being said, Gilbert Arenas also recently pointed out that Jordan wouldn’t be perfect like LeBron James if he played in today’s era.
Fans will never find out how MJ would have played in this era. After all, it’s still a hypothetical debate and there’s no way for us to find an answer to it.
