Former Lakers star Markieff Morris has reignited a contentious debate by claiming that Giannis Antetokounmpo would be without an NBA championship if not for Kyrie Irving’s injury during the 2021 Eastern Conference Semifinals.

“If Giannis ain’t put his foot under Irving, they would’ve had a championship. Milwaukee would still be without a championship.”

Morris speaking to Stefan Bondy, asserted that the Milwaukee Bucks‘ victory hinged on Irving’s unfortunate sprained ankle, which significantly altered the series dynamics in favor of the Bucks.

Reflecting on the pivotal moment, Morris remarked that the Nets, who had home-court advantage and were leading 2-0, were primed to sweep the Bucks before Irving’s injury.

The incident occurred in Game 3 when Irving landed awkwardly on Antetokounmpo’s foot, resulting in a sprained ankle that sidelined him for the remainder of the series. The Bucks capitalized on Irving’s absence, winning the series in seven games and eventually claiming the NBA championship.

Morris emphasized the impact of Irving’s injury by suggesting that Milwaukee’s title was fortuitous. He argued that had Irving remained healthy, the Nets were on track to secure the championship. This perspective aligns with sentiments expressed by former Bucks point guard Jeff Teague, who similarly acknowledged the injury’s significant influence on the series outcome.

Irving’s tenure with the Brooklyn Nets was marred by various controversies and absences, including his refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, which sidelined him for much of the 2021-22 season. Despite these issues, Irving’s performance when available was exceptional, notably during the 2021 playoffs when he averaged 27 points per game.

After a tumultuous period with the Nets, Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he formed a potent backcourt duo with Luka Doncic. The Mavericks’ offensive prowess was highlighted throughout the season, culminating in their appearance in the 2024 NBA Finals.

Morris’s remarks underscore the hypothetical nature of championship narratives, highlighting how injuries can drastically alter the course of NBA history. While Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are celebrated for their 2021 championship, Morris’s perspective suggests that fortune played a significant role in their triumph.

As Irving seeks redemption with the Mavericks, the debate over his impact on past and present NBA outcomes continues to spark discussions among fans and analysts alike. Morris’s comments serve as a reminder of the fragile nature of championship runs and the fine margins that often separate triumph from defeat in the world of professional basketball.
