In his introductory press conference for the Phoenix Suns, head coach Frank Vogel gave an inkling of what could be expected under his mentorship.

“This is the beginning of a new era in Phoenix Suns basketball,” Vogel said. “And it’s going to be an exciting one. … When we get out there and play, we’re going to be scrappy as hell.”

The former Los Angeles Lakers coach has a championship in his resume, something the Suns will sorely need after falling to achieve that objective this season. Despite the addition of Kevin Durant, the team fell short in the playoffs.

That said, the Suns haven’t stopped the coaching staff construction as they added former NBA head coach David Fizdale to Vogel’s staff, in addition to retaining Kevin Young as the top assistant.

It appears that Vogel, who is a defense-first coach will add more teeth in that department. While the Suns have always been offense heavy, expect some of their stars to focus on locking up their opponents more this time around.

With Frank Vogel As Head Coach, The Suns Could Retain Deandre Ayton

With Vogel set to take charge as the Suns coach, reports of Deandre Ayton, who is reportedly on the trade block might get another run with the team.

“I think there’s a better chance than people think,” said Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective. In response, Zach Lowe added: “I think the chances went up by a non-trivial amount with the hiring of Frank Vogel, who has a good track record with centers,” replied Zach Lowe.

“I think part of the reason why Frank Vogel got the job is because when he came in he had an idea of what to do with Deandre Ayton,” said Windhorst. “It does not mean it’s going to work. They obviously, as an organization, have a complicated relationship there. They did not want to pay him the max. For the last year, he was in an adversarial relationship with his coach.”

The Suns might be tempted to run it back with their current roster one more time. Their depth might cost them again, but with Vogel, it remains how every player on the roster fares.
