The Phoenix Suns are set to start a new era this 2023-24 NBA season after parting ways with Monty Williams.

The team had high expectations after landing Kevin Durant ahead of the trade deadline, looking good on their way to the NBA Playoffs. 2020 NBA champion Frank Vogel is set to take over in Phoenix, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

“The Suns are planning to hire Frank Vogel as the franchise’s next coach, sources tell ESPN. Sides are starting work on a long-term deal. Vogel brings with him a 2020 NBA title and history of constructing high-level defenses.”

This is a big pick for the Suns, who parted ways with a two-time Coach of the Year award winner before agreeing to sign Vogel. After another blowout elimination in the second round, the team’s front office decided to release Williams.

While Monty is the new Detroit Pistons head coach, Vogel is taking his spot on the Suns, set to create something good at Footprint Arena and take this team to the promised land once and for all.

Kevin Durant remains committed to this project, as he’s excited about the Suns’ future. This is a big opportunity for Vogel, who was the first NBA champion or Coach of the Year, to be fired in the past year.

Doc Rivers Withdrew Himself From Consideration For The Phoenix Suns Coaching Job

The Suns had a series of candidates to take this job, including Doc Rivers and Kevin Young. The former Philadelphia 76ers head coach reportedly withdrew himself from consideration, leaving the door open for Vogel.

Shams Charania adds that this deal will be for five years and $31 million. Not as much as Monty Williams will make in Detroit, but exciting enough to lure Vogel.

The Suns have two incredible players in Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, and if they add the right pieces, this team can make some noise next season.

Vogel is a defensive coach, which is what the Suns lacked last season. If they’re able to build the best team for him, Phoenix will have reasons to dream.
