The Phoenix Suns’ hopes of winning the 2023 NBA Championship were crushed by Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Following an underwhelming postseason run, head coach Monty Williams was axed by the organization. NBA insider Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson recently revealed that despite Williams’ firing, players like Kevin Durant are optimistic about the team’s future.

“Phoenix Suns players were briefed of Monty Williams firing right before it became official,” Scoop B tweeted. “Belief in Suns locker room was that the roster was rough, but many are optimistic like Kevin Durant who I’m told is excited for team’s future loves it out there and excited to build there.”

Moving forward, the Suns undoubtedly need to make some major changes to the roster. Sure, they have the dynamic duo of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, but outside of that, the Suns lack in several aspects.

The silver lining for the Suns is the fact that Durant wants to stay with the team and give it another try. In the 2023 NBA playoffs, KD averaged 29.0 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 5.5 APG, 0.8 SPG, and 1.4 BPG.

Kevin Durant Didn’t Make Any Excuses For The Phoenix Suns’ Disappointing Season

A second-round exit wasn’t the end that the Suns were hoping for this season. They simply got outplayed by Nikola Jokic in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Kevin Durant had an underwhelming Game 6 performance. While he could have made an excuse, the former NBA MVP simply urged his team to be better next year.

“If I provide context, it’ll just be looked at like an excuse,” Durant said. “We just gotta be better next year.”

It’s easier said than done, as the Suns will undergo massive changes to reshape their roster before the start of the new season.

The first step in doing so would be to hire a new head coach as soon as possible. Mike Budenholzer and Nick Nurse are reportedly on the team’s target list. Will the Suns be able to sign either coach to replace Monty Williams? We will find out in the coming weeks.
