Austin Reaves may not be one of the best players in the NBA just yet, but he is definitely in a purple patch of form for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Reaves has started generating interest internationally, with the German Basketball Association looking to recruit Reaves to represent them internationally. Reaves has confirmed the interest and has taken it under consideration.

“I’m very interested and have already talked to Dennis Schröder about it. I had a long conversation with national coach Gordon Herbert a year ago. I’m right up for it.” (h/t Spox)

Reaves grandmother is German, and the Lakers star has a German passport. Given the depth of talent for Team USA, Reaves will have to ascend a lot further before he would be in real consideration for that. Germany has plenty of active NBA players like Reaves’ teammate Dennis Schroder, the Wagner brothers in Orlando, and Maxi Kleber in Dallas.

Austin Reaves Rising In Status

Ever since Austin Reaves joined the Lakers as a rookie last season, he has been a cult favorite. For many, he was the spiritual replacement for Alex Caruso, who had left the team that summer for the Chicago Bulls. Instead of being a dogged defensive-minded specialist like Caruso, Reaves is a versatile offensive player who has taken off recently.

He dropped a career-high 35 points in the Lakers’ win over Orlando before following it up with a career-high in assists in their win last night over the Suns, receiving MVP chants from the Laker faithful. He’s stepping up in the absence of LeBron James and earning plaudits for it.

Further refining his skills by playing international FIBA ball may unlock another level in Reaves’ development.
