It wasn’t an easy win for Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Bucks on Thursday, but he found a way to pull out a win with 44 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists on the night. The only player comparable to Giannis on the floor was Victor Wembanyama, who was hailed as “unbelievable” by the 2x MVP.

“He’s unbelievable. Unbelievable talent. He can score at will, anytime he wants. Plays the right way. Plays to win. It was good to play against him,” said Antetokounmpo after the Bucks’ 125–121 win.

Giannis has always been able to appreciate talent, and it’s no surprise he sees a superstar in Victor Wembanyama. At 7-foot-4 barefoot with an 8-foot wingspan, Wemby is practically unguardable when he goes up for a shot and his long arms are good at bothering the best of scorers. Ultimately, Victor’s heroics were not enough to win the game tonight but it’s a good sign that Giannis (and so many others) are already sold on his abilities as a star.

Wembanyama Is A Stud

While much of the Rookie of the Year chatter has been dominated by Chet Homgreen in Oklahoma City, Victor Wembanyama is arguably even more deserving of the award. Ignoring the performance of the team this season, Wemby has been amazing with averages of 18.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game on 44.4% shooting. With 91 blocks on the season, Wemby is currently leading the category and is making a strong case for the Defensive Player of the Year conversation.

The craziest thing is, this is just the beginning for Wembanyama. With just 29 games played so far, he still has so much to learn and so much more room to grow and develop his game. Over the next few years in San Antonio, it will be interesting to see how Wemby changes his game and what level he’s able to rise to with more experience in the league. For now, he’s still out to prove himself against the best of the best and it starts with dominant showings like the one he had against Giannis tonight.

Giannis Isn’t Going Anywhere

At this point, there is no question that Victor is the future of the league but Giannis is here now and he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Against the Spurs this week, he had his latest masterpiece in what has been an MVP-worthy campaign so far. In 33 games, he’s been having one of his best stretches yet with averages of 30.8 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game on 60.6% shooting.

The Bucks, while not as impressive as some would have hoped, are still having a fantastic season at 25-10 and that’s mostly due to the play of Antetokounmpo, who has carried them every step of the way. While he may not be as tall, young, or crafty as Victor Wembanyama, he’s much more powerful and just as equally hard to stop on the court.
