During his playing days, Gilbert Arenas was one of the most controversial in the NBA. But since retiring from the league, Arenas has made it his habit to speak facts in front of the camera.
This time around, Arenas did so by uncovering how referees have the power to manipulate the outcome of the game. Arenas thinks it is because refs can influence it by favoring superstar players and sending them to the free-throw line.
“The easiest group to manipulate is referees. He’s gonna rig it in favor of the stars. This is a game you’re gonna have 40, 50, because all I have to do is just blow the whistle every time I think you got touched. All I’m doing is just putting points on the board. So this is not a game you can see. I want you to score 40. I want you to score 40 because the number rises. If you are a referee, you are talking about the point spread. You can see that s**t coming from a mile away.”
Gilbert Arenas took the example of the infamous rigging scandal featuring Tim Donaghy. Donaghy was popular for being the main man in rigging games and making money off them during his stint as an NBA referee.
Tim Donaghy Was Involved In Various NBA Scandals
Tim Donaghy was an NBA referee for 13 seasons from 1994 to 2007. During his stint as NBA referee, Donaghy was involved in several scandals, including allegedly rigging the 2006 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks.
Donaghy went as far as saying that the Mavericks in 2006 and the Kings in 2002 would have won the NBA Finals if it wasn’t for the series being rigged against them.
In addition, Donaghy also unveiled the 2007 NBA Western Conference Finals between the Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs was rigged against the Suns.
There have been many instances where Donaghy has talked about the league favoring superstars and big teams. Whether you believe it or not is entirely up to you.
