The question regarding the greatest player in basketball history had a very straightforward answer till about ten years ago when everyone would almost unanimously agree that it is Michael Jordan, with some possibly naming Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

In 2023, the debate is firmly between MJ and LeBron James. The more years LeBron plays, the more people start joining his camp. Iman Shumpert, a former James’ championship teammate from the Cavaliers, has admitted he thinks LeBron is the GOAT.

“I just put my guard down and said Bron you’re the best. You got it, the greatest ever… It took JJ Redick’s quote for me to get here… I was looking like, ‘Damn bro, have I been hating?'”

The JJ Redick quote that Shumpert is referring to was something JJ used to explain to Stephen A. Smith the insanity of LeBron, having had the longevity he has enjoyed in the NBA. Jordan might have had a better prime and was more dominant than LeBron for a decade, but James has rewritten the book of NBA longevity by playing at the highest level for over 20 seasons. Comparing MJ with Bron is interesting, but the conclusions can differ from person to person.

Can James Become A Five-Time Champion?

The only thing that will boost LeBron’s odds of being looked at as the unanimous GOAT is winning more championships. The Lakers made an unlikely Western Conference Finals run this season before they were completely exposed by a Nuggets team that will likely end this season as the NBA champions.

The Lakers are linked heavily to Kyrie Irving as James looks for a teammate to carry the offensive burden for his team, given his age and the miles on his legs. James isn’t going to be having GOAT moments all that often anymore, so we need to appreciate whatever moments we get from him.
