The Boston Celtics have finally addressed the depth of their coaching staff by making a major acquisition to boost the help around Joe Mazzulla.
Former Celtics player Sam Cassell will be moving over to Boston after spending the last few seasons as an assistant coach on the Philadelphia 76ers.

Cassell has spent the last 10 seasons attached to teams that Doc Rivers coaches, spending a lot of time on Doc’s staff with the Clippers and then the 76ers. With Nick Nurse overhauling the 76ers’ coaching staff, Cassell was free to rejoin the Celtics. Cassell won the 2008 championship with the Celtics and is one of the most well-regarded assistants in the NBA.
Will Adding Cassell Be Enough For Boston?
The Celtics excelled on the strength of their coaching bench last season, with Ime Udoka leading the team and Will Hardy serving as his primary assistant. Mazzulla was deeper on the bench and had to step up after Udoka was suspended from the team, and Hardy left to become the coach for the Utah Jazz. These changes clearly impacted the Celtics, that lost to the eighth seed in the Conference Finals despite improving their roster from last season.
Sam Cassell has a great reputation, with him excelling due to his strong relationships with players. Given the issues that clearly impacted Boston’s locker room during the Heat series, having a voice as respected as Cassell’s will be a massive advantage. He’s been interviewing for head coaching positions for the last few seasons, so Boston has definitely gotten an elite coach to help Mazzulla grow into the seat he may have gotten a few years early.
