Grizzlies star Ja Morant finds himself in hot water after reports of an alleged incident went viral that involved himself, a firearm, and a 17-year-old kid whom Morant reportedly punched multiple times in the face.
As the NBA community came together to condemn the young star, Morant’s agent, Jim Tanner, released a statement on behalf of his client that downplayed the whole ordeal.
“Any and every allegation involving a firearm has been fully investigated and could not be corroborated. This includes the NBA investigation last month, in which they found no evidence. The July 26th event was purely self-defense. Again, after this was fully investigated by law enforcement, they came to the decision not to charge Ja with any time. Any of the dozens of witnesses will confirm Ja acted in self-defense and that he did not have a firearm. Ja is a family-first man who loves giving back to his community. He’s an extremely talented athlete. It’s disturbing that unsubstantiated rumors and gossip are being put out by people motivated to tear Ja down and tarnish his reputation for their own family gain.”

Ja’s reps are not the most unbiased source in this, but they aren’t wrong about the accusations lacking proof. Besides witness statements and rumors, there is nothing that suggests Morant did any of the things he is being accused of.
Still, it leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many and it’s hard not to wonder why these stories would be coming out about Ja if they are rooted so deeply in lies.
Are Morant And The Grizzlies Still Fine In The West?
While the Memphis Grizzlies are still the second seed in the Western Conference, they haven’t been playing their best basketball of late. Until Steven Adams returns, their struggles could continue to get worse.
It doesn’t help, of course, that these stories about Morant are coming out during the late-season playoff push and it could be hard for the team to ignore how much of a distraction the whole ordeal has become.
No doubt, as more and more details emerge, we will find out what really happened between Ja, his crew, and the people he allegedly victimized. Until then, though, Ja is going to keep leading as he always has: with confidence and unapologetic swagger.
