The NBA dunk contest is typically one of the best parts of All-Star weekend. For fans, they get to enjoy the game’s top athletes pull off some high-flying moves that we rarely get to see in-game.

For players, they get to show off their skills and draw some more attention to their names.

Over the years, many different stars have participated in the dunk contest and they all looked to be having fun.

So when a fan asked Ja Morant if he would consider joining, a lot of people were expecting him to be all about it. Instead, he answered with a clip shooting that idea down completely.

For whatever reason, Ja just wasn’t about it and it’s a shame, too, because he’d probably do really well.

Of course, the Grizzlies star has bigger things on his plate anyway. As the fourth seed in the West, Memphis is hanging with the Conference’s top teams, perhaps giving credibility to the idea that Morant and his team have a real chance to compete for a title.

Much remains to be seen, and it’s still way too early to say with any certainty whether they’re true contenders or not. But, at the very least, people should recognize what they could be in the future: a true Western powerhouse, led by Morant. Kendrick Perkins once even likened the young star to Giannis Antetokounmpo.

People keep saying rising superstar, I think he’s already at that level. In my opinion, I’m looking at Ja Morant, and he’s going to be in my opinion the “next Giannis” of the NBA.

I’m not just talking about individual accolades. But when I look at this young leader, this young killer. If I had to bet all the money in the world, he will be the next superstar to lead a franchise, a small-market franchise to winning a championship. All the other players to do that over the last 10 years are: LeBron James, yeah in Cleveland. But Giannis, and then it’s gonna be Ja Morant. That’s how special of a talent he is.

This season, Morant is averaging 25 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game on 49% shooting. The Grizzlies are 26-14 so far this season.

So, Ja is proving to be among the best guards in basketball and that much is clear. Just don’t ask the guy about the dunk contest. He’s clearly not about it…
