- The Sixers reportedly ended trade talks regarding James Harden
- Harden though still wants out and has no plans to report to training camp
- Harden’s camp is hoping meaningful developments on the trade front will take place before that
The James Harden saga looks set to rumble on for a while longer this offseason. There was a big update on the situation recently when it was reported that the Philadelphia 76ers had ended trade talks on Harden and planned to bring him back for training camp.
Not much traction had been gained in trade talks with the Los Angeles Clippers, Harden’s preferred destination. This doesn’t mean Harden is changing his stance, however, as the 10-time All-Star still wants out and has no plans to return to training camp, as per The Athletic’s Sam Amick.
“No matter what signals the Sixers might send when it comes to trade talks,” Amick wrote. “A source close to Harden reiterated that the 10-time All-Star and former MVP no longer wants to play for Philadelphia and has no plans of taking part in training camp.”
Amick did go on to say it remains unclear whether Harden would actually hold out of training camp. The former MVP’s camp is hoping that meaningful developments will take place before it commences, but that doesn’t seem very likely.
It had been reported that the Clippers are ‘unserious’ in trade talks involving Harden, and they really don’t seem to be pushing hard to get this done. No other team has really been heavily linked with him either, so it does look like this is going to get really messy.
Why James Harden Is Unhappy With The Sixers
Harden’s relationship with Sixers President Daryl Morey has come under the microscope this offseason. The two got along very well during their time together with the Houston Rockets, but things have gone south now.
It was reported that Harden is unhappy with Daryl Morey because he didn’t get a long-term max contract from the 76ers. The former MVP averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 10.7 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game last season and would feel he deserves to get it.
From the Sixers’ standpoint, though, he once again struggled in the postseason and missed 24 games due to injury. Combine that with the fact that he is 33 years old now, and you can see why the Sixers were reportedly going to offer Harden just a two-year contract before his trade request.
