- James Harden publically called Daryl Morey a liar during his China tour
- The NBA has opened an investigation into the situation
- Harden has privately indicated the reason behind his comments
The James Harden saga has taken another twist now, with the former MVP’s reason for calling Philadelphia 76ers President Daryl Morey a liar in the spotlight. With the NBA launching an investigation into the Harden-76ers situation, the 10-time All-Star has indicated why he made those comments, as per Adrian Wojnarowski.
“Harden has privately indicated that his public comments calling Morey a ‘liar’ on Monday morning had only been a response to Morey ending trade discussions,” Wojnarowski wrote. “With an expectation that Harden would start the season with the Sixers, sources said.”
There was some talk that the former MVP and Morey had a “wink-wink” agreement last year when Harden took a $15 million pay cut to help the 76ers improve their roster. It was thought that he only did so in the belief that Morey would give him a huge contract this year, and his failure to do so is what caused this outburst in China.
That agreement would have violated the terms of the CBA and could have landed all parties involved here in some trouble. This report, though, indicates the issue stems from the 76ers ending trade talks on Harden last week. The 33-year-old had opted into his $35.6 million player option in the belief he would be traded, and you’d understand his frustration over the 76ers deciding to keep him around.
James Harden Said It’s Too Late To Fix The Relationship With The 76ers
It is crazy to think just how different the situation was in Philadelphia this time last year. Harden’s pay cut had helped them assemble arguably the best roster of the Joel Embiid era and things were going spectacularly well. It seems a return to the good old days just isn’t possible anymore.
Harden thinks it is too late to repair the relationship with the 76ers and one way or the other, you’d think he does get moved eventually. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of interest in Harden, as he isn’t the player he once was, but he still averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 10.7 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in the 2022-23 season. You’d think eventually some team will consider him to be a risk worth taking.
