At one point in the early days of the 2022-23 season, the Memphis Grizzlies looked like one of the best teams in basketball. On paper, one could make the case that they are still unmatched as a group, but it just didn’t come together when it ultimately mattered.
The worst part for Memhpis is how they went down in the first round after trash-talking for months and weeks leading up to the playoffs. But as All-Star big man Jaren Jackson Jr. explained on the ‘Podcast P’ show, getting humbled the way his team did may have been the best thing to happen to them.
“I think getting humbled was the best thing for us. I think it’s gonna make us way more hungry like we were three years ago when there was no expectation on anything. We got leveled at the end of the year. So, we gotta sit with that all summer. We were done in May. We’re gonna have that edge, we’re gonna come back, we’re gonna be hungry… We’re gonna get it done.”

It’s almost hard to believe how candidly Jaren spoke on his playoff loss, but it could be considered a good sign for Memphis. After everything that happened with the team, and with Ja Moranr specifically, it’s good to know that they haven’t last their competitive spirit.
But until they prove themselves in the playoffs, there will always be a sense of doubt with this team and Jaren Jackson Jr. is going to use it as fuel to push him towards greatness.
What’s Next For The Grizzlies?
A fully healthy Grizzlies team might have made some noise this year, but the biggest problem for this group was ultimately their confidence and attitude as a team. While they were dominating at first, the tough guy act caught up with the Grizzlies by the All-Star break and experts could see the cracks starting to form way back then.
This summer, GM Zach Kleiman will have his work cut out for him. Not only will he have to find someone to replace Dillon Brooks, but he may also have to look for a replacement for Ja Morant as well, depending on the ruling of his suspension.
Regardless, the Grizzlies are going to be active in some form this offseason, it’s only a matter of what they are able to pull off before it’s all said and done.
