Jason Kidd Says Luka Doncic And Kyrie Irving Are Meant To Be Together: “It Just Takes Time”

Jason Kidd believes the Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving duo in Dallas will work out in the long run.

The Dallas Mavericks saved their season with a strong win over the playoff-bound Sacramento Kings tonight with a 119-123 win at home.

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving both had strong games, with Luka controlling the offensive in the first 3 quarters before Irving exploded in the fourth. Mavs’ head coach Jason Kidd reiterated the team’s belief that this duo is special but needs time to gel.

The Mavs looked the same tonight as they do in most games, the difference was that the shots started to fall. The Mavs anyway end up losing most of their games in clutch time, including their most recent loss to the Atlanta Hawks in OT.

Mark Cuban has indicated he wants to extend Kyrie Irving but he didn’t seem too optimistic about it being a supermax contact like Kyrie wanted. This free agency situation is going to be extremely interesting heading into the summer, as Irving will test the open market before making a decision on where he wants to play.

Will The Mavericks Make The Play-In?

The Mavericks are currently tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 10th seed, with OKC also owning the tiebreaker between the teams. The Mavs need to win both their remaining games while hoping OKC loses one of their last 2. Dallas could actually end up winning out, with a game against the play-in qualified Bulls and then their season-ender against the tanking San Antonio Spurs.

The Mavs will be a very dangerous team to face in the play-in given the single-game nature of the tournament. If Dallas gets hot, there’s no team in the NBA that can stop them. Given their success in offensive execution in the half-court, a play-in game may even lend more to their playstyle than Minnesota or New Orleans, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

If Dallas misses the play-in, they’ll pray to the Draft Lottery Gods that their pick is in the top 10 so they don’t have to give it away to the New York Knicks.
